Is this school year going by fast or slow? Have you ever been assigned a big project not due for another four months? Last year I was told on the first day of school that we had a 65 paragraph paper due in APUSH at the end of the semester. I, of course, told myself that I would work on it a little bit each day and gradually finish the monster essay. Time passed and I hadn’t even touched it. How did three months pass by already? It had only felt like two weeks. I think many students feel this way, especially seniors. We get caught up in applying to colleges, finishing senior projects, and figuring out who we want to be. I think that some classes help the school year go by slower so students don’t feel as overwhelmed. One class that has really helped me pace myself is ‘Career Information and Exploration’, also known as “the senior project class”. I have it first period with Mr. Seavers and it helps me keep my senior project organized and on track for completion. In the beginning of my senior year, I still felt like an underclassman. It hadn’t processed in my brain that I only had two more semesters until I finish with high school. I would run around with friends every day until late at night and then stay up passed eleven studying and doing homework. I didn’t put into consideration that I had more tasks than usual due to senior requirements. Most seniors have to deal with applying to colleges, taking the SAT and ACT, and register for scholarships. My situation is much easier, I applied to Trevecca Nazarene University on July 1st and was accepted with a $32,000 scholarship. I am extremely blessed compared to many other seniors that get cheated out on scholarships. I think that this school year is going very fast because of how much stress has been relieved due to my college situation. In addition to the stress relief, I think that I have been more positive this year than I have in the past three years. In my opinion, being positive makes the school year go by faster and when you are negative and grumpy, the school year goes by slower. Last year, I was very stressed out about graduating high school and getting into college. This year, I’m not worried since I have almost completed all of my credits and been admitted to my dream college. I’ve realized that when you focus on the positive things and trust that things will be okay, you feel much better and the school year seems easier and goes by faster.

How to Make the Day Go by Faster at School ‘Ever heard someone say, “Wow, that day was too short?” Of course you have. We’ve all said it. But 24 hours is 24 hours no matter what you’ve been doing. Our perception of time passing is dependent on where else our brains are engaged while living through that day. Scientists are beginning to discover that the brain has more control over its own perception of passing time than people may know. Tell Your Brain It’s Fun The teacher repeats herself. The Power Point is crowded with a meaningless glut of text. Your head bobs into the beginnings of seductive sleep. You so wish you were doing anything else than sitting in that class. Instead of giving in to dozing or wishing your day away, convince your brain that you are actually enjoying the class. In the December issue of the journal “Psychological Science,” Dr. Gal Zauberman, an associate professor of marketing at the Wharton School of Business led a team of investigators who tested college students’ memories. Psychologists found that when people were tricked into believing that more time had passed than was really the case, they assumed they must have been having more fun. The sensation of passing time can be very different, Dr. Zauberman said, “depending on what you think about, and how.” Relocate Yourself Perception of time varies so much throughout the day. Minutes can feel like hours, or the reverse, depending on many factors. Researchers at University College in London investigated this idea directly by showing test subjects either a series of randomly changing pictures or a steady image. More accurate judgement of time was noted in the subjects who had more images coming in more rapidly. The researchers concluded that the brain keeps time by tracking the things going on in the outside world. You can fool yourself by violating your brain’s expectations. One way to use these findings is to provide new stimulation in potentially boring situations. Selecting a different place to sit, or taking notes in an unusual format, could trick your brain into believing time is moving more quickly. Take On a Challenge This scenario is suggested by Dr. Richard Curwin, of The David Yellin College of Education in Jerusalem: “Imagine you are going to play a game … you have your choice of two opponents. The first is someone who has always beaten you. You’ve gotten close to winning but never have done so. The second choice is someone you have easily beaten every time.” Dr. Curwin suggests people rarely choose the easily beaten opponent, “because the challenge energizes us. Our whole body is focused, adrenalin runs through our veins. We are in a heightened level of consciousness.” Take this suggestion into school and opt for the more difficult path of learning. Speak up if you’re normally a quiet participant in class, or volunteer to solve a challenging equation for other students. Teachers are advised by Dr. Curwin to employ this method in order to increase motivation in their students. “Providing appropriate challenge to students beats any form of reward in motivating students,” he concludes. Fantasize Contrary to instinct, letting your mind wander may inflict more harm on you as a learner than it would benefit the quick passing of time. Although mind-wandering seems to result from feeling bored or unmotivated, it does little to relieve that boredom and may even make us more unhappy or depressed than ever, according to a report published in “Psychology Today.” However, other researchers suggest that, “Brief episodes of mind-wandering can be an important survival mechanism to get through the day and move on to something more challenging. Boring tasks also seem to take longer than they really do. How is College Different from High School?Here are a variety of ways in which high school and college differ. Understanding some of the important differences and preparing for them will help you achieve a smoother transition. Class Time HIGH SCHOOL: You spend on average 30 hours each week in class, proceeding from one class to the next. The school year is 36 weeks long; with a short break in the spring and a long one over the summer. COLLEGE: You spend 12 to 16 hours each week in class, usually with breaks in between. Classes are not limited to the day with many classes offered in the evening. In most cases, the academic year is divided into two 15-week semesters with an additional week after each for exams. Generally, you’ll have a winter break and a spring break, and the spring semester concludes in May. Class Size HIGH SCHOOL: Classes generally have no more than 35 students and are taught by teachers. COLLEGE: Depending on the size of college, classes may range in size from 20 to 100+ students. Classes are taught by professors typically referred to as “Doctor” if they have acquired a doctorate in their chosen field. At large universities, classes may be taught by graduate assistants, not professors. Teaching Style HIGH SCHOOL: Teachers present material from textbooks, often writing information on the chalkboard or whiteboard to be copied in your notes. COLLEGE: Professors also present material from textbooks as well as other academic sources. They may lecture nonstop, have breakout activties, organize in-class assignments, or discuss research about the topic you are studying. You will be expected to be up to date on all assigned readings and be able summarize it, so good notes are critical. Time Management HIGH SCHOOL: Your time is usually structured by others: administrators, teachers, coaches, and of course, parents. Teachers carefully monitor class attendance. COLLEGE: You manage your own time. It’s up to you to get to class, do your homework, and study. Professors may not formally take attendance, but they are still likely to know whether or not you attended, especially at smaller colleges where they will get to know you. Homework HIGH SCHOOL: You will usually be told what you need to learn from assigned readings and teachers will remind you of assignments and due dates. They will check your completed homework. COLLEGE: Professors expect you to utilize the course syllabus (outline), which spells out exactly what is expected of you, when it is due, and how you will be graded. It’s up to you to read and understand the assigned material; lectures and assignments are based on the assumption that you’ve already done so. Professors may not always check completed homework, but they will assume you can perform the same tasks on tests. Assistance HIGH SCHOOL: Teachers will approach you if they believe you need assistance. COLLEGE: Professors are usually open and helpful, but expect and want you to attend their scheduled office hours if you need assistance. Students will also have resources like an Academic Skills Center or Writing Center at their disposal should they need it. Studying HIGH SCHOOL: You are expected to read short assignments that are then discussed in class. You may study outside of class as little as 2 hours each week, and this may be mostly test preparation. COLLEGE: You are assigned substantial amounts of reading and writing, which may not be discussed in class.
