The reason why “Disjointed” was cancelled – Glossyfied.com

The Real Reason Why Netflix’ “Disjointed” Was Cancelled With the gradual ending of marijuana prohibition and the start of legalization in society, television has followed in-suit, slowly moving away from euphemistic slang to insinuate characters are smoking pot to fully embracing weed-themed shows and weed-friendly audiences.  However, after the announcement that Netflix’s weed-themed sitcom Disjointed got canceled after just one season, the show has proven it takes more than a growing acceptance of weed in society to create a winning pot comedy that balances humor and consciousness. What is Disjointed? Disjointed is an American comedy created by a former writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stuart, David Javerbaum, and longtime comedy generator Chuck Lorre. You might know him as the creator of shows such as The Big Bang Theory, Mike and Molly, and Two and a half men.  The show’s creators delivered a 20-episode order which premiered on streaming giant Netflix on August 25, 2017, with its storyline pretty much focused on weed. The sitcom stars two-time Emmy award-winning Kathy Bates as the central character, Ruth Whitefeather Feldman. Ruth Feldman is an old-school hippie who runs a medical marijuana dispensary and advocates for legalization.  When she becomes the owner of the L.A.-area cannabis dispensary, she gets a glimpse of what a world pro-cannabis could be. Most of the plots and storylines on Netflix’s Weed-Themed Sitcom occur within her dispensary’s consumer space, office, and grow room.  Up in the center of all the comedy is her three budtenders – Pete played by Dougie Baldwin, the resident botanist of Australian descent, Jenny ( Elizabeth Ho), the “‘shop’s token Asian” as she refers to herself and Olivia ( Elizabeth Alderfer) whose easy on the eye. Other central characters include her twenty-something-year-old son Travis Feldman (Aaron Moten), and a troubled security guard, who is unsurprisingly always high. The show also features Tone Bell, Chris Redd, Betsy Sodaro, Nicole Sullivan, and Michael Trucco, who broke out the news of the show’s cancellation via a Twitter post, one season after the show’s debut. Why did Disjointed get canceled? According to High Times, the show, which opted for unfavorable blunt stoner humor, got canceled due to an appalling viewership. While Netflix attempted to garner larger audiences after assessing its decreasing popularity, viewers just were not down to watch an eccentric group that puffed weed more than they cracked jokes.  Early Disjointed reviews left a sour taste for anyone who thought of attempting to watch the show on a clean slate.  “Watch a multicamera sitcom on a family of pot retailers, and don’t expect much in the way of coherence, or much in the way of laughs either,” wrote a critic on Rotten Tomatoes. According to High Times, the Pot Comedy held a mere 23 percent rating amongst critics on rotten tomatoes but thankfully redeemed itself with a respectable score of 80 percent amongst viewers.  Apart from its dull take on humor, as per Salon, the comedy series’ low viewership could have stemmed from the sitcom’s decision to take creative departures from the standard sitcom formatting that sadly became a mishmash of styles that made no sense.  These inventive measures included characters hallucinating conversations with people who were not there, uninspiring weed-centric commercials, and animated segments. Thankfully, the show’s utter fail did not harbor any serious long-term effects for the show creator, Chuck Lorre. Directly after Disjointed’s cancellation, Lorre signed a deal for a new sitcom on Netflix as per high times.  The show’s star Kathy Bates featured on other projects, including Clint Eastwood’s new drama called Richard Jewell,…

Netflix's Weed-Themed Sitcom 'Disjointed' Canceled

Netflix’s Weed-Themed Sitcom ‘Disjointed’ Canceled While weed has slowly made its way into mainstream television, there has been an unfortunate casualty amongst cannabis-centric programming. The announcement that Netflix’s weed-themed sitcom Disjointed canceled after just one season just broke. ‘Disjointed’ Flames Out The series, penned on spec by longtime sitcom stalwart and The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and former Daily Show head writer David Javerbaum, landed at Netflix on a 20-episode order following a bidding war between several prominent broadcasting and streaming outlets. The multicamera workplace sitcom starred two-time Emmy award-winning Kathy Bates in the role of Ruth, a lifelong cannabis advocate who finally received the chance to live out her fantasy as an owner of an L.A.-area cannabis dispensary. Joining Bate’s Ruth are three budtenders, her twenty-something-year-old son and a troubled security guard, all of which were, unsurprisingly, stoned more often than not. One of the shows supporting stars, Michael Trucco, originally announced the news on Twitter. I love these guys like a family & I loved making this show. So sad to see it goThank you ALL so much for watching! @MsKathyBates @RealElizabethHo @SullivanNicole @LizAlderfer @BirdySoderdy @toneBell @AaroncMoten @Reddsaidit @DougieBaldwin @davidjaverbaum #Disjointed #gonetoosoon pic.twitter.com/37wQZTkRtR — Michael Trucco (@MichaelTrucco) February 14, 2018 The show appeared to have two seasons, following its original debut in August 2017, but the first season was actually split into two, ten episode parts, a common practice of Netflix sitcoms. It appears Netflix attempted to garner a larger audience following the first half of the first season, but the show never took off, leading to its inevitable cancellation. The series received scathing reviews from critics, panning the show for its predictable jokes, over-the-top pot plots, odd animated cutaway sequences, and just an overall lack of hilarity. While critics were less-than-favorable of the show, casual fans, overall,  seemed to approve of the pot comedy. The series held a ghastly 23 percent rating amongst critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but a respectable score of 80 amongst viewers. Other shows receiving the axe from Netflix include Lady Dynamite, Girlboss, Gypsy and The Get Down.  Despite the nixing of Disjointed, this shouldn’t be the end of the road for Bates or Lorre and their respective Netflix affiliations. While the failure goes down on Lorre’s resume as his first one-and-done show since 1992’s, Frannie’s Turn, his first original show after writing for Roseanne, Lorre already has a deal in place for another Netflix sitcom. The Kominsky Method, a single camera sitcom starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin, is set to debut sometime this year. As for Bates, her American Horror Story collaborator Ryan Murphy has reportedly signed an exclusive five-year contract with Netflix, worth up to $300 million. If Bates is looking to make her way back on to the streaming service, this could most certainly be her easiest way in. However, for now, it appears the duo’s last endeavor, is simply, just a roach. Author Hailing from New York. His hobbies include (but are not limited to) eating eggs, owning far too many cats, and watching Rob Schneider films. He’s a self-taught expert in the cannabis industry and hopes to share his vast knowledge with fellow weed-enthusiasts around the world. Chuck Lorre Pot Comedy 'Disjointed' Canceled at Netflix

The Hollywood Reporter Logo text Netflix is snuffing out pot comedy Disjointed. The multicamera comedy starring Kathy Bates from prolific producer Chuck Lorre has been canceled at the streaming giant. The series, written on spec, landed at Netflix with a straight-to-series, 20-episode order following a competitive situation with broadcast and streaming outlets bidding. Co-written by Big Bang Theory co-creator Lorre and David Javerbaum (The Daily Show), the workplace comedy starred Oscar and two-time Emmy winner Bates as a lifelong advocate for marijuana legalization who is finally living her dream as the owner of a Los Angeles-area cannabis dispensary. Joining her are three “budtenders,” her 20-something son and a deeply troubled security guard. All of them are more or less constantly high. The comedy was produced by Warner Bros. Television, where Lorre — the exec producer behind CBS comedies Mom, Big Bang and Young Sheldon — is under an overall deal. Disjointed marked a reunion for Lorre with Bates, who earned an Emmy for her guest role on the producer’s Two and a Half Men. Disjointed premiered in August with the second half of its season dropping in January. The series has a 23 percent rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 80 percent user score. (Netflix, like fellow streamers Amazon and Hulu, does not release viewership data.) While Disjointed — one of multiple pot-themed projects in the works on the small screen — will not continue, Lorre remains in business with Netflix. The streamer picked up the Lorre-created single-camera comedy The Kominsky Method, starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin. A premiere date for the comedy, also from WBTV, has not yet been determined. This marks a rare early cancellation for Lorre, whose only other one-and-done show was CBS’ 1992 comedy Frannie’s Turn — the first show he created after his time writing on Roseanne. The decision to cancel Disjointed comes as Netflix continues to refine its approach to scripted. Other recent cancellations at the streaming service include Lady Dynamite, Girlboss, Gypsy and The Get Down. For Lorre, meanwhile, Big Bang Theory and prequel spinoff Young Sheldon are already renewed for the 2018-19 broadcast season as Mom also is considered a slam dunk to return.
