The Pink Profile Pic Facebook virus hoax – Naked Security

The Pink Profile Pic Facebook virus hoax Have you noticed the profile pics of some of your Facebook friends have acquired a pink tinge? Rumours have hit the social networking site that the Facebook app that turns your profile picture pink carries “keylogger malware” that can spy on your keypresses, and steal your passwords – not just from Facebook, but from online banks you may log into as well. One warning reads as follows: ABC News 24 just released a statement about a virus on facebook app that adds a pink tinge to your profile picture to `raise money for cancer`. Be aware this fake third-party app installs a virus on the machine you used to access the app. Apparently its a keylogger malware that searches for bank details and passwords etc. Facebook allows keylogger in its apps to aid predictive search algorithms, and therefore the virus hasnt been picked up. Keep a look out for any of your friends who may have fallen victim to this app. Apparently, they should be easily identifiable with a pink tinge to their profile picture. However, the warning is balderdash. ABC News has released no such warning, the app is not malicious and we have seen no evidence that it contains a keylogger. The truth is that your Facebook friends are doing something positive – helping raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Australian bank CUA raises funds every October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year decided to share an app that would change users’ profile pictures pink to show that they were supporting the campaign. Remember to always get your computer security advice from a computer security company. Friends may be well-intentioned in passing on warnings, but it’s always good to check your facts before forwarding them any further. If you want to learn about the real threats on Facebook you should join the Sophos Facebook page, where we’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest rogue applications, scams and malware attacks threatening social network users.

That’s just the way Facebook is at the moment, requiring some complicated steps even for simple tasks. Also, the fact that Facebook constantly makes changes and tweaks to its interface can make things a bit more confusing. But let’s clear that.Facebook has two images that sit on your main profile- Profile Picture which is displayed in circle shape and the Cover Photo which is the rectangular shaped banner like image. You can enhance the look of your Facebook profile by choosing the right size and quality for these images.First, let’s address the the basic question about what size or dimensions to use for Facebook Profile Picture and why does it get cropped. Let’s answer this.Is Cash App FDIC insured? [Complete…Please enable JavaScriptWhat’s the Facebook Profile Picture Size and why does it get cropped? The Facebook Profile picture is displayed in the following dimensions:180 by 180 pixels- For Desktop / Laptop view128 by 128 pixels- For MobilesNote, that this is the size in which the profile picture is displayed and not what is uploaded or stored in Facebook. You can actually upload a picture of any size. But the minimum width needs to be 180 pixels. While the dimensions make it look simple, getting the right image size can be confusing. Because when you upload the Facebook Profile picture in a normal fashion, it gets cropped and saved in square shape automatically (there are some easy hacks to upload without cropping discussed below)And the way the cropping is done is that it will crop the height or width (whichever is more) – to make it equal to the size of smaller side to form a square. For e.g. if image size is 720 (w) x 480 (h), it will crop the width to make the image a square of 480(w) x 480(h). This is assuming you don’t do zoom-in while uploading the pic.If you choose to apply full zoom, the photo will be cropped 180 by 180 which is the default display size ignoring both dimensions of original pic. However, when it is displayed on your profile or in your posts, it takes the shape of a circle with diameter equal to 180 pixels. So ideally, you should choose a square profile picture with yourself in the middle so that the image looks good even when its displayed in smaller format the mobile. Here you can also take help of tool websites to resize your Facebook Image as per requirement.Let’s now answer the question on how to upload Facebook profile picture in full size (no cropping):How to Upload Facebook Profile Picture without CroppingYou can upload Facebook Profile Picture without cropping in full size using the Facebook Classic Interface on Desktop.
